The Red Zone

What is The Red Zone?

The Red Zone is a period from the beginning of orientation till the start of winter break when over 50% of campus sexual assaults occur, with particular risk from the start of move-in to the beginning of Thanksgiving break.

Students who are new to campus, such as incoming first-year and transfer students, are the most vulnerable to sexual violence during the Red Zone. Those new to campus, or college life in general, must navigate new social and physical environments, such as parties, relationships, and different living environments. This period of rapid exploration heightens the risk of experiencing sexual violence and comes at a time before many have had the chance to establish a solid social network, familiarize themselves with community resources, or get to know trusted adults who could offer support. In other words, experimentation and risk is an all-time high, while access to established safety and protective resources are at an all-time low.

When students first arrive on campus, they are re-orientating themselves to understand how they as an individual fit into their newfound community. They are re-establishing a sense of safety and trust in their environment as they transition from one physical space to another. This time of orientation and safety can greatly impact a student’s long-term sense of trust in their school, community, and world at large, which is why it is essential that we as students, staff, faculty and parents commit to the safety and well-being of all students at Ohio State.
